Vibration Liposuction: The Latest Lipo Game Changer
Liposuction remains one of the most popular things that I do. Whether as a stand-alone procedure or as part of a mommy makeover or tummy tuck, most patients want as much fat removed as possible. It still requires the right candidate, and I have written about the importance of good skin elasticity before removing fat and paradoxically it is still one of the most imprecise things that I do. Liposuction is without a doubt more of an art than a science.
But there is a new game changer in both fat removal and fat replacement — vibration-assisted liposuction. We have used vibration to remove fat in the past, better known as power-assisted liposuction. I’ve been increasingly using vibration alone, without suction, to equalize the remaining fat after the suctioning is done.
“SAFE” Liposuction Explained
“S” stands for separation, done with a tiny tube called a vibrating liposuction cannula. This separation lets us get into the fat more easily and evenly. It can even help to free up tight or scarred areas from old liposuctions. “A” stands for aspiration, the removal, now much easier to do because of the separation. Then comes the “FE” or fat equalization- using vibration to help even out the remaining fat, smoothing out high spots or small lumps. For me, vibration has been a game changer particularly in secondary or repeat liposuctions where the fat is less forgiving.
Fat Grafting
I am also using the same principles now for fat grafting, particularly in Brazilian butt lifts. Along with many, I feel that vibration allows fat to be added more easily and evenly in the buttocks. Buttock fat grafting is being done more in the superficial layers of the buttocks in order to diminish risks. Injecting fat into the muscle may lead to dangerous fat in the bloodstream. Vibration and more equal distribution in the superficial layers lend itself to lower risk, and I hope more long lasting and even results.
Whether removing or replacing fat, candidates must still be healthy to minimize risk, and patients with good skin elasticity will still have the best results. More than ultrasonic and laser, I feel that simple vibration is the next big thing in making liposuction better and “SAFE”r. This technique is already regarded by many European surgeons as the best liposuction method available.
